AWS NY Summit Highlights: Ruling the Cloud Stack and an Expanding Ecosystem

Mew York AWS SummitLast week’s NYC AWS summit was yet another success for the cloud giant. Just shy of the impressive turnout at re:Invent 2013 in Las Vegas, last week’s summit had so many attendees, they ran out of badges! As always, the lectures were great, however, we weren’t told anything new. Despite the ever-growing awareness of AWS cloud, Werner has been pitching the same “old” messages for years. Security issues, price reductions, fast deployment, and scalability were introduced in a much more organic way three years ago, and this year’s summit proved that these concepts have been fully internalized by AWS users. Continuing to promote the seemingly never ending list of cloud features, Werner is a true evangelist and cloud celebrity who attracts crowds of thousands when he speaks.

My Interview with Adrian Cockcroft – Netflix Cloud Pioneer

Adrian-Cockroft-bigOn Wednesday July 2nd, Adrian Cockcroft from Battery Venture is going to lecture on an IGTCloud and IamOnDemand meetup. Prior to joining Battery, Adrian  lead Netflix’s migration to a large scale, highly available public-cloud architecture and the open sourcing of the cloud-native NetflixOSS platform – the Netflix cloud management platform.

The Netflix Cloud

Netflix, the popular American provider of internet video streaming, dominates the market with over 50 million subscribers and a third of all internet traffic during peak hours. Netflix currently operates in over 40 countries and has announced its expansion to 6 more European countries. Netflix is not only the leader in internet streaming services but an example of the largest pure cloud service based on an open-source stack running on Amazon Web Services. Netflix is a widely referenced case study for how to effectively operate a cloud application at scale.
Following his arrival to Israel, I had the pleasure of interviewing the Netflix cloud pioneer.

50% on S3? AWS Helping Google Into the Game or Stopping the Cloud Race to Zero?

Screenshot_228One day after Google announced a substantial price reduction for their cloud services, Amazon announced their own dramatic price reduction on several AWS offerings. This move will reduce the revenues of one of Amazon’s most profitable services, the S3, by about 50%. What were the AWS leaders thinking just before Andy Jassy went on the SF summit stage?

This decision raises a few questions about Amazon’s market strategy. Why would a leading company willingly cut their successful stream of revenues so suddenly in light of a new competition? Aside from the profit loss, Will this move – stop the IaaS vendors’ race to zero? will it position GCP a notable player in the cloud arena, as AWS largest direct competitor.

Cloud Academy: Test Drive Your Cloud Skills

Cloud academyAccording to IDC’s prediction, 7 million new cloud related IT jobs will be created by 2015. As cloud is still evolving, there is an overall lack of knowledge, skills and experience in the IT industry. This is intensified by the fact that new cloud features and innovations are introduced weekly by cloud service vendors, especially by the AWS cloud guys. The constant expansion of the cloud world is causing this knowledge gap to constantly increase.
